The Heart Behind Coconut Crushers

The backyard moments that inspired The Monkey Crew

How My Grandsons Inspired Coconut Crushers

Every great adventure begins somewhere. For me, Coconut Crushers began in my own backyard, watching my four grandsons play.

They explored, climbed, created, and dreamed together. Their laughter filled the air, and their ideas could turn an ordinary afternoon into something entirely their own.

I loved watching their imaginations at work. I also loved watching them together—four cousins who often act more like brothers, each bringing a different personality to whatever happened next.

Those moments became the inspiration for The Monkey Crew: Coconut Crushers – Jungle Jam Champs.

How My Grandsons Inspired Coconut Crushers

Before there were jungle games and coconuts, there were Wesley, Owen, Blake, and Miles.

Each brought something special to their little crew. Watching them gave me so much to notice: curiosity, determination, playfulness, and the ways they found their place alongside one another.

When I began creating the monkey characters, pieces of those familiar personalities naturally found their way onto the page.

That is part of what makes this book so personal. Behind the illustrated adventure are children I know and love, and moments I wanted to remember.

From Backyard Play to Jungle Adventure

Children have a wonderful way of seeing possibilities in what is already around them.

A game changes halfway through because someone has another idea. A simple object becomes part of an adventure. Before long, everyone has a role in a world they are creating together.

That spirit helped shape Coconut Crushers.

I wanted to carry the energy of those afternoons into a playful jungle setting, with room for teamwork, curiosity, a little mischief, and plenty of laughter.

The adventure grew through writing and illustration, but its heart stayed close to home: four cousins discovering what they could do together.

The Family Connection Behind The Monkey Crew

One of the things I treasure most is the bond between my grandsons.

They are different ages, with different interests and ways of joining in. Watching those differences become part of their shared play is a joy.

That is something I wanted to honour in The Monkey Crew. Each character has a place. Each brings something to the story.

As a Nana, I see the affection behind the adventures. As a writer and illustrator, I get to imagine where that connection might lead.

Bringing those two parts of my life together has made creating this book especially meaningful.

Capturing a Season I Want to Remember

Children grow, and the details of their days change.

The toys they reach for, the games they invent, and the things they call us over to see all belong to a particular season.

Writing Coconut Crushers gave me a way to hold on to something of this one.

I think about the muddy shoes, the sandy pockets, and the familiar call of “Look, Nana!” Each invitation asks me to stop for a moment and notice what matters to them.

Those moments can pass quickly. Creating this book encouraged me to pay attention.

When I look at the finished pages, I remember the children and the family moments that helped bring them to life.

When Children Recognise Themselves in a Story

There is another layer of joy when the book comes back into the hands of the children who inspired it.

Sharing Coconut Crushers with my grandsons has become part of the story, too.

In My Youngest Monkey, I share a tender reading moment with Miles and his mama.

And in Inspiring Children to Write, I reflect on Wesley’s excitement about creating stories of his own.

These experiences remind me how closely reading, imagination, and family memories can become woven together.

What Story Would Your Little Crew Inspire?

Perhaps your own family has a favourite memory that still makes everyone laugh.

A backyard adventure. A holiday mishap. A game the children invented that became more elaborate every time they played.

Try asking your children or grandchildren:

  • If our family became story characters, who would we be?
  • Where would our adventure take place?
  • What funny problem would we need to solve?
  • What would each person bring to the crew?

You could talk about it together, draw a picture, or let someone begin telling the story and see where it goes.
