The Heart of the Kingdom
Walking with Jesus Through the Beatitudes
An Invitation to Sit With Jesus
There are moments in our faith journey when we long for a little more quiet. Somewhere to bring our questions, our weariness, and our desire to feel nearer to God.
The Heart of the Kingdom was written with those moments in mind.
This second book in my Closer Still series invites readers to spend time with the Beatitudes—to listen carefully to Jesus’ words and prayerfully consider how they touch everyday life.
Writing it brought me back to a simple desire: to make room for the words of Jesus to reach beyond what I understand in my mind and begin shaping how I live.
An Invitation to Sit With Jesus
At the beginning of Matthew 5, Jesus goes up a mountainside, sits down, and begins teaching His disciples.
“And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying…”
— Matthew 5:2, KJV
What follows begins with blessing. Jesus speaks of the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, and those who hunger and thirst after righteousness. He calls attention to mercy, purity of heart, peacemaking, and faithfulness through persecution.

These are familiar words for many of us. Yet familiarity can sometimes cause us to move past a passage before we have really listened.
This book is an invitation to linger.
What the Beatitudes Reveal About God’s Kingdom
As I spent time with the Beatitudes, I kept returning to how differently Jesus describes a blessed life.
He makes room for people who know their need. He speaks comfort into mourning. He honours gentleness, mercy, and the desire for righteousness.
For someone who feels weary or uncertain, there is much to sit with here.
The Beatitudes also ask something of us. They invite us to examine our attitudes, our relationships, and the choices we make when faith becomes difficult to live.
My hope is that readers approach these words with honesty and openness, trusting God to reveal where encouragement, surrender, or change may be needed.
A Slow Walk Through The Heart of the Kingdom
Each chapter offers an opportunity to spend time with one part of Jesus’ teaching.
Together, we consider:
- Poor in spirit: acknowledging our need for God.
- Those who mourn: bringing sorrow into His presence.
- The meek: exploring gentleness, humility, and surrendered strength.
- Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness: noticing what our hearts are seeking.
- The merciful: considering how we receive and extend mercy.
- The pure in heart: inviting God into our motives and inner life.
- The peacemakers: practising peace in our relationships.
- Those persecuted for righteousness: reflecting on faithfulness when following Jesus is costly.
The closing invitation to rejoice gives us space to consider hope and joy alongside difficulty.
Some passages may feel especially close to your current season. Others may raise questions you want to carry into prayer. There is room for both.
Designed for Reflection at Your Own Pace
I wanted The Heart of the Kingdom to be a companion readers could return to.
The chapters bring together biblical teaching, word studies, personal reflections, journalling, worksheets, and “Drawing Closer Still” practices for everyday life.
You might read a section during your morning quiet time or spend several days with one question. You might underline a sentence, write a prayer in the margin, or close the book and sit quietly for a while.
There is no need to hurry toward the final page. Give yourself time to notice what you are learning and where God may be asking you to respond.
Bringing the Beatitudes Into Ordinary Days
The questions these teachings raise reach into familiar places.
How do I respond when someone hurts me? Am I willing to acknowledge my need for help? What would making peace look like in this conversation? Is there something in my heart I have been avoiding bringing before God?
Throughout the book, I share reflections from seasons of grief, surrender, hunger, mercy, and joy. These are places where faith has become personal for me—where familiar words have asked for an honest response.
I am still learning. That is part of the heart behind this book, too.
A Gentle Place to Begin
If you would like to spend a little time with the Beatitudes today, begin with one verse.
Read it slowly. Notice the words that draw your attention. Then ask:
“Lord, what would You have me notice here?”
You could write a few lines, offer a simple prayer, or carry that question with you through the day.

Continue the Journey
The Heart of the Kingdom is now available for readers who want to spend time with the Beatitudes through Scripture, prayer, and reflection.

My hope is that these pages offer you room to listen, reflect, and respond—and encouragement to keep walking with Jesus in the ordinary moments of your life.
