The Holy Ache: When Your Heart Wants More of God
A reflection inspired by Closer Still
Recognising the Holy Ache
There is a longing that can visit us even when life looks full.
It may come in the early morning quiet, between errands, or after a day spent caring for everyone else. We pause long enough to notice something we haven’t quite found words for.
Lord, I want to know You more deeply.
I think of that longing as the holy ache: the desire to draw nearer to God, to listen more carefully, and to let faith become part of how we live each day.
It can be tender and difficult to explain. Yet it gives us somewhere to begin—with an honest prayer.
Recognising the Holy Ache
Perhaps you have been reading Scripture but longing to spend more time with what it says. Perhaps your prayers have become hurried, and you miss the space to speak openly with God.
Or perhaps you have been walking through something difficult and find yourself asking where He is in it.
These experiences deserve gentleness. We don’t have to understand every feeling before bringing it into prayer.
We can begin with what we know: I’m weary. I’m distracted. I have questions. I want to draw closer.
Faith has room for that honesty.
Scripture Gives Words to Our Longing
Psalm 42 opens with the image of a deer longing for water. The psalmist uses that thirst to express a deep desire for God.

I find comfort in encountering longing within Scripture. It reminds me that questions, tears, and desire can all be brought into a life of faith.
Jeremiah offers another passage worth sitting with:
“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
— Jeremiah 29:13, KJV
These words were addressed to people living in exile, within a promise that included a long season of waiting. Reading the surrounding verses helps us hear that setting. You can explore Jeremiah 29:10–14 here. Bible Gateway
For me, the passage encourages wholehearted seeking while reminding me that waiting may still be part of the journey.
Making Room to Respond
When we long for a deeper relationship with God, it can be tempting to create another demanding list.
More reading. Longer prayers. A routine we feel guilty about missing.
A small, thoughtful beginning may be more helpful.
Read a short passage slowly. Put your phone aside for a few minutes. Write down a question you want to bring before God. Carry one verse with you into the day.
These practices give our desire somewhere to go. They help us turn our attention toward the relationship we want to nurture.
When Nearness Is Difficult to Feel
Some days, prayer feels natural. Other days, we struggle to find the words.
A quiet time may bring comfort, or it may end with questions still unanswered. We can continue seeking God without expecting every moment to produce a particular feeling.
There is room to pray simply:
Lord, I want to draw nearer to You. Help me listen, understand Your Word, and respond faithfully today.
If this has been a difficult season, sharing honestly with a trusted person in your faith community may also offer encouragement. We can seek God alongside others.
A Three-Minute Pause for Today
Find a few minutes when you can set aside the next task.
Read a short passage of Scripture, then consider:
- What am I longing to bring before God?
- What has been taking most of my attention?
- What is one small response I can make today?
You don’t need to force an answer. Write a sentence if it helps, offer a prayer, and return to the passage later.
The purpose is to make room for a relationship that matters to you.
